The City of Ioannina, with its 112.486 inhabitants, is the capital of the Epirus region. Ioannina has always been multicultural, multilingual, and multireligious with Christian, Islamic and Jewish influences shaping its identity. Several events have marked Ioannina’s history of migration and diversity, the latest being the humanitarian crisis of 2015. Moreover, at the end of World War I, the town hosted Greek refugees from Asia Minor and the Pontos region and in 1990, Ioannina was the first point of arrival for many Albanians who left their country after the fall of Communism. Today, the majority of migrants in Ioannina come from Albania, Pakistan, and India. Moreover, it hosts around 2500 refugees and asylum seekers, many from Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan.
